Statement by the President on the occasion of Ramadan

At the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, Michelle and I extend our best wishes to Muslim communities here in the United States and around the world.

For the billion and a half Muslims in the world, Ramadan is a time of serious reflection, fasting and devotion. It is also an opportunity for families and friends to gather and celebrate the principles that unite people of all faiths: a commitment to peace, justice, equality and compassion for our fellow man. These links are stronger than the differences that often separate us from each other.

This month also reminds us that freedom, dignity and opportunity to succeed are the inalienable rights of all humanity. We meditate on these universal values at a time when many citizens across the Middle East and North Africa continue to push for human rights and while millions of refugees mark Ramadan away from home. The United States stands with those who seek to build a world in which everyone can draw their future and freely practice their faith without fear of violence.

In the United States, Ramadan reminds us that millions of Muslim Americans enrich our country every day - we see them serve our government, scientific breakthroughs, create jobs and care for their neighbors in need. I had the honor of holding a iftar at the White House every year for the past four years, and this year I look forward to accommodate Muslim Americans who contribute to our country as of entrepreneurs, activists and artists.

I wish Muslims across the United States and around the world a month that will make them taste the joys of family, peace and understanding. Ramadan Kareem.
