IFJ calls on Guinea-Conakry attacks against journalists




The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) on Sunday urged the Guinean authorities'' to ensure better protection of journalists in the line of duty.'''' A few days crucial for political stability in Guinea-Conakry elections, the IFJ has documented a series of attacks and attacks against journalists and media professionals,'' said a statement sent to the APS.
Cited in the document, the Director of the IFJ Africa, Gabriel Baglo, said:'' We are very concerned about the escalation of violence against journalists and media professionals during this period of social and political unrest in Guinea.''
'' We urge the Guinean ensure better protection of journalists authorities. We also ask journalists to establish a protocol for efficient security to better cover the electoral process,'' he added.
In its statement the IFJ says he'' documented since August of last year, several unpunished attacks against the media in Guinea.''
Thus, the radio station FM Liberté'''' N'Zérékoré located in the southeast of the country was closed in August 2012 by the acting prefect of the city. The first Friday and Sunday, March 3, 2013, private FM radio'' Planet'' and'' Renaissance'' FM were respectively attacked.
Also part of the studio'''' Planet Fm was attacked by gunmen as an opposition leader was interviewed there, note IFJ adding that'' local Renaissance Fm were violently attacked at night ' '.
IFJ still remember at the beginning of this month of June, the'' National Communication Council (CNC) had decided to suspend the Planet FM radio + + and journalist Mandjan Sidibe for a month.''
'' The organization considers this decision as an abuse of authority, violation of freedom of the press and freedom of expression'', adding that'' on June 19, Siré Mamadou Diallo, newspaper reporter satirical private + Lynx +, was severely beaten by a group of police in Conakry while in the performance of his duties.''
